Car Screensaver -Toyota-

Posted on 13/05/2024

To me, a car is a kind of creature.

When an advertisement focuses on cars, it often removes the human element so that we have more brain left for thinking about the car itself. Sometimes, the car is even depicted as being entirely empty, and you're just not meant to think about it. Like a toy car.

This leaves us with the platonic ideal of a car - a large roaming shape that traverses huge distances across beautiful, desolate landscapes, seemingly just because it can.

This also makes cars cute to me. They're like simple animals, relying on instinct and trying to survive the picturesque vistas they find themselves in.

This hopefully explains why I always get excited when I see this type of Car Media, and why I had to get Car Screensaver -TOYOTA- when I saw it being sold second hand online.

I should also add - I basically know nothing about cars. Like, actual real facts I mean. I don't really know car brands, and I couldn't recognize any type of car that I might see in the wild.

But I love the idea of a car, and I love screensavers.

I didn't have much to go on from the art on the CD case alone, but I could kind of tell it was going to represent cars in the way that I crave.

Using the CD

Yeah! That's what I want!! I was so happy about the vibe that I was already basking in just from launching the CD. The CAR SCREENSAVER repeated background makes me smile, I think it'd be a good (if confusing) desktop background all on its own.

It asks for an install directory, and, in case you didn't know, you "install" screensavers in earlier versions of Windows by just, putting them in the system32 folder. That's where they go! All in a big pile.

Car Screensaver -Toyota- includes three screensavers, and they are all very good.

Screensaver 1: TOYOTA Slideshow

Ahh, okay now! Wait a moment, please!! Forget what I said about not knowing any car facts because this first screensaver is full of them. I now know that the Aristo's overall length is 4920mm, its width is 1795mm and its height is 1405mm. And I learnt all of that in the first few seconds!

More names fly by in their different fonts, all with beautiful photos of the cars to match... Caldina, Camry, Carina, Carina ED (the GT-Exciting Version!)...

It's too much. The previous car facts leave my mind the second new ones fade in.

But that's okay! I can just let the screensaver start to loop and re-learn the millimetre length of my favourite cars all over again whenever I want.

Screensaver 2: TOYOTA Clock

I'm not sure why this one is called TOYOTA Clock, because I couldn't get a clock to show even when changing the settings. Mysterious!

Nevertheless, I respect this one for its simplicity, and for showing POV glimpses of what it'd be like to actually be inside the car, instead of just looking at it from the outside.

But the real star has yet to shine...

Screensaver 3: TOYOTA Screen Saver

Yes... Yes!!! Where did the realistic Toyota cars go? Why is it just cartoony cars zooming around the screen now? It doesn't matter, I am ALL about this. When I'm looking through a box full of floppies for even one piece of treasure, this is exactly what I'm hoping to find.

This screensaver has no properties you can adjust, and why would it? It's perfect.
